A New Era of Giants Football: How the 2023 Team is Different from Past Giants Team

A New Era of Giants Football How the 2023 Team is Different from Past Giants Team

The New York Giants are one of the NFL’s most successful franchises, winning eight championships and appearing in 33 postseasons. After five consecutive losing seasons, they rebounded in 2022 to make the playoffs under new head coach Brian Daboll.

The Giants want to continue the momentum in 2023 but face some challenges as they try to take the next step in their pursuit of another Super Bowl. Playing in the NFC East alongside the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys will test every bit of the team’s core as both those teams have only gotten stronger in the offseason.

We will examine how the Giants are trying to change their fortunes from one of recent embarrassment to newfound success. Also, who are the key players they will rely on to take them to the next level and potentially past the Eagles?

A New Era of Giants Football

The 2023 Giants will have a slightly different look from the previous year, notably tight end Darren Waller, added from the Las Vegas Raiders. The most significant change, however, is the team’s expectations going into the season. In 2022, the Giants were not predicted to win many games. Behind their new head coach, they defied those odds, going 9-7-1 and beating the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card Round.

Now in 2023, Giants fans expect that momentum to continue. The question is whether they can get to double-digit wins and beat out the Eagles, the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last season.

The Expectations: Back to Reality?

The New York Giants upcoming odds indicate that they are expected to win between eight and nine games this season, consistent with last year’s performance. However, some experts believe the Giants were fortunate to win as many games as they did in 2022. Therefore, the team must play significantly better to go over that projected total.

The biggest question surrounding the team is quarterback Daniel Jones and the offense. Jones had a breakout 2022 season despite not having much help around him, besides star running back Saquan Barkley. Some don’t think the quarterback can play at the same level next season, especially with a mediocre offensive line and receiving corps. Giants fans hope that last season was just a stepping stone for Jones to win even bigger things in the future.

Brian Daboll

Daboll is the 22nd head coach in Giants history, joining the team in 2022. He has 20 years of NFL coaching experience, mostly as a defensive assistant. He is also a five-time Super Bowl champion, coaching under Bill Belichick and the Patriots dynasty. Daboll was named the Associated Press 2022 NFL Coach of the Year.

The biggest question for the Giants’ success in 2023 will be whether Daboll can replicate last season’s magic. What seemed to be a talentless roster went on to win numerous close games, ensuring a playoff spot. But a more challenging schedule lies ahead, and the Giants are no longer going under the radar. If Daboll can bring the same level of creativity and innovation he did a season ago, the Giants can challenge for the division title and maybe even the Super Bowl.

Key Giants Players

QB Daniel Jones

The former Duke star has been a key player for the team since he was drafted sixth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. Despite some struggles early on, Jones has demonstrated his potential as a talented quarterback with the ability to make plays both with his arms and legs.

While turnovers have been his biggest concern, the Giants showed faith by signing him to a four-year contract extension worth $160 million. This extension signifies the team’s belief in Jones’s ability to continue to improve and lead the Giants to success in the coming years.

CB Deonte Banks

The team hopes their first round draft pick from Maryland can make an immediate impact with the team. The Giants ranked 20th against the pass in 2022 and were shredded by Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts in last year’s Divisional round game.

Banks has the size and strength to take on anybody, and he’s not afraid of contact. He ran a 4.35 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine and posted an incredible 42” vertical jump. His athleticism will make him a difficult cornerback to throw or run on.

A new mindset

Apart from adding key players like Waller and Banks, the 2023 Giants have a different mindset than in past years. This is a more confident team who believes they can get to the next level. To do that, they need to protect Jones better and allow him to mature while also playing better defense than they did a year ago.

The NFC East is shaping up to be the toughest division in the NFL next year, and if the offseason is any indication, the Eagles and Cowboys are going to be challenging competition. The Commanders have also added key players and are poised to return to the postseason. But with Daboll and a more confident approach, the Giants know they can take the necessary steps to come out on top.
