Tips for Improving Your Overall Wellness in 2021

When people ask, how are you? We get a myriad of responses but my favorite is, “I am well,” says Executive Director of the American Kinesiotherapy Association, Kathy Camp. What does that mean? Wellness isn’t fitting into a smaller pair of jeans (although that makes me feel well). It’s overall peace. It’s achieving satisfaction in your emotional, spiritual, social, and physical self.

Most of us will never be perpetually happy, constantly zen, or have 6 pack abs a week after having a child. The people that say, I am well, wake up every morning with a certain mindset that they are strong. They are worthy. They are capable. They have purpose.

Because of this mindset, they walk further. They take the stairs. They make better food choices. They make exercise a part of their daily routine. They make choices that support their mindset.

Start each day with the intention to be well and the rest will follow. Here are some tips for improving your overall wellness in 2022.

Switch Off

Brandon Wachs, Shark Eyes, Inc.:
Turn off all gadgets or notifications after your workday. You will be astounded by how much extra time you have without your smartphone and social media. Your mind will have mental downtime and you will allow yourself to be truly present in the moment.

Protect Your Eyes

Markus Goess-Saurau, Co-Founder of Sond Skin
With so many of us working from home at the moment, it simply isn’t possible to spend less time by a computer screen. To protect your eye health, as opposed to using your computer on its default settings, consider adding a constant blue light filter. Companies such as Microsoft and Apple have acknowledged the dangers of blue light and over the last number of years have released blue light filters for their operating systems.

If you use an Apple device, consider activating “Nightshift” on Mac OS and iOS throughout the day. If you’re a Microsoft user, then simply adjust your blue light emissions via the settings tab. If the operating system you’re using doesn’t allow you to adjust your blue light all is not lost! Many brands are now also physical blue light filters that you can place over your screen and are equally as effective.

Meditate

Donna Ray, Sales and Marketing Manager of Cream Charger Warehouse:
One of my secrets is Cosmic Meditation, I find that practicing it using ultimate breathing techniques gives me a great edge when ensuring that I have the right mindset to relax my mind and body after a long, exhausting day. Cosmic Meditation will lead your awareness to your breathing. Cherish the calmness, freedom, and enjoy the quiet sensation.

Stay Hydrated

Dr. Allen Conrad, BS, DC, CSCS at Montgomery County Chiropractic Center:
Anything to help track your water intake will help you be more consistent. Some people find it easier to take out how many bottles of water they need for the day and place them on the counter. By the end of the day, if the counter is empty, you have reached your daily quota. For weight loss, it is also recommended to drink a bottle of water right before you eat, as well as first thing in the morning to get your metabolism moving. Keeping track of your daily water intake will help with not only weight loss, but increased digestion and better skin. And to keep you motivated, you can get a Personalized bottled water where you can add a quote that will drive you to succeed in your weight loss.

Get Up and Move

Carrie Collins, Founder and CEO of H.O.W. Highly Organized Woman:
Include a recurring daily reminder on your digital to-do list for a workout, “me time,” or other dedicated healthy habits. It doesn’t matter what you do, when you do it, or for how long—just that you do it. Do yoga at 6 am for 30 minutes one day; a 5-minute sleep meditation at 10 pm the next. You’re proactively protecting time to stay healthy, and the recurring reminder means you don’t waste time having to think about it.

Nourish Yourself

Suman Chatterji, Founder and Editor of Good Health Corner:
Wellness to me means the perfect balance of physical, mental and emotional health. Wellness is a state which helps people to achieve the best in their lives. To me, the most important aspect in achieving wellness is through food. Being conscious and including the right kind of food which are non-inflammatory and are not known to cause food intolerances is a great place to start. Including food which helps the gut microbiome to thrive like prebiotic fibers, non toxic organic fruits and veggies, essential fatty acids, good quality fats and proteins are essential in attaining wellness.

In Conclusion

Improving your wellness means making a concerted effort to do things for your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. At its core, wellness is about being kind to yourself. These tips are merely meant to be a guide, and you can follow the same framework in coming up with your own, even adding the practice of having yourself undergo STD testing to make sure you are free from auto-immune diseases. After all, you know yourself best.
